Description of works:

Murray & Willis recently completed the refurbishment of Hawthorn Resource Centre in Burton upon Trent in a Semperian Asset management building managed by Staffordshire County Council.

All of our staff and in particular our Contracts Manager Mr Steve Sutton took great pleasure in transforming the facility as it is used for children with disabilities for short breaks & too give their parents the support they need.

Andrew Nortcliffe of Semperian Asset Management, the landlords of the building said:

"From the outset to completion of this project M & W have acted in a positive and proactive manner, which has delivered an first class facility, that everyone can be proud to be associated with, and a fantastic new environment for the occupants of the building."

Andrew Bright an Associate at Aedas Building Consultancy added:

The scope of works included the decoration to all bedrooms and ancillary areas including all of the corridors on the ground and first floor.

Mechanical works involved the conversion of a study to a specialist bathroom, which included a Malibu bath and hoist plus the conversion of two ground floor en suite bedrooms to act as disabled bedrooms/bathrooms, which we fitted out with specialist baths and hoists.

Electrical works included fitting door closers to the bedroom doors which are connected to the fire alarm & new light fittings throughout.

We fitted automation and intercom to the existing main entrance doors making the site more secure.

As an unusual aspect to the project we converted a cloak room into a specialist sensory room with a bubble tube, UV lights, pin spot and soft play area which is a highlight of the children's learning experience.

We also reduced the width of both staircases so that they conform to disabled regulations, residents to walk up the stairs to the first floor being able to hold onto both handrails. We formed this using studwork and plasterboard and applied a plaster skim finish.

Another interesting element of the project, were the very distinct tiled bathrooms, where we sourced and fitted designer themed tiles to emphasize the theme in each bedroom.

Outside the building, we supplied and fitted a new external climbing frame with slides, climbing wall, rope ladders and bridges with a new soft play surround including external landscaping works.
