We were appointed by Peterborough City Council as the main contractor to refurbish one of the city’s most popular attractions: the Peterborough Museum, which annually attracts tens of thousands of visitors.

The museum is based in a majestic Georgian period building, set over three floors and occupying 15,000 square feet in total. Parts of the main fabric of the building were restored, including many period features that had to be maintained.

The first stage of our appointment was an initial core refurbishment, which required the stripping out the public areas, galleries and toilets before our in-house team decorated throughout using a neutral palette of various heritage paint colours.

We then moved onto the strengthening of the existing timber floor so that we could install a new heating and air conditioning system whilst at the same time bringing the building in line with the latest DDA legislation.

As part of our appointment we created a new gift and souvenir shop, added new toilets, fitted-out a new café; we also refurbished the community gallery and public exhibition areas and worked closely with Haley Sharpe Design who designed the project, specified the lighting, decorations and flooring for the new elements of the museum.

As well as refurbishing the main exhibition areas we restored the historic operating theatre which, on completion, opened to the public for the first time. We also restored the original kitchen and in doing so created a new education space. The additional education and general meeting areas were also enhanced.

Although we were initially allocated 16 weeks in which to complete the projects the project timescale was subsequently increased to 20 weeks following the discovery of extensive lead based paint, which had to be carefully removed prior to re-decoration.
