Project:
Arthur Thompson Lecture Theatre Refurbishment
Project Duration:
12 Weeks

Murray & Willis Ltd were appointed as principal contractor for the refurbishment of the Arthur Thompson lecture theatre project. The lecture theatre is located on the second-floor of the East Wing of the Medical School Building, Vincent Drive Edgbaston, adjacent to the main University campus.

The lecture theatre was completely stripped out back to the bare shell; which included removal of existing furniture, fittings, finishes, ceilings, lighting, heating and tiered seating. In addition to this the flat roof above the theatre was replaced with new ‘Derbigum’ high performance waterproofing materials by an ‘Alumasc’ specialist installer. New air handling units servicing the lecture theatre were also installed on the roof which required close co-ordination between our mechanical and electrical contractor and the ‘Alumasc’ contractor. Works also included forming apertures within the roof which were accurately ‘set out’ to accommodate the equipment installed within the lecture theatre ceiling. The air handling units were lifted onto the roof and into position by the use of a crane, which was positioned on the Queen Elizabeth hospital grounds and close co-ordination with the QE activities were required. Existing exposed structural columns and beams were over-clad with bespoke laminated panels imported from abroad and we also installed new LED lighting which was incorporated within the panels to give a unique vision.

New services were installed which included heating, ventilation, lighting, power, data and audio-visual equipment. We installed a new suspended flat ceiling which incorporated new LED panels, fire detection sensors and emergency lighting throughout. New floor finishes where installed throughout which included the level floor area and tiered seating area. Bench seating was installed by a specialist furniture contractor and we also engaged with a specialist balustrade contractor who supplied and installed edge protection to the tiered seating. New blinds were installed to all of the windows and decorations were carried out to all areas by our own in-house decorating division. The project was completed on time, within budget to the complete satisfaction of the client and end users.
