the
project

Murray & Willis were appointed by Wolverhampton City Council to undertake the complete transformation of an unused, newly built unit within the Leisure Centre into a Café to form a new vibrant eating space for the community and users of the centre.

The project was delivered over a ten week period and had to be completed while the Leisure Centre remained open to the public. The client was keen to have the Café open ready for the new academic school year, which meant the programme had to be meticulous down to the exact detail.

The scope of works included the removal of internal block walls, formation of new wall layout, new screeded floor, new DDA access ramp, air handling unit, kitchen and servery, seating areas, office and welfare facilities including mechanical and electrical installation.

The DDA ramp which was over 14.5m in length and 1.5m wide followed the curve of the existing wall. The whole area of the Café was screeded to bring the floor level up, to match the existing thresholds of the external doors which was made up of 100mm screed, 75mm insulation and 2000 gauge DPM to cover a total area of 202m².

To the main elevation of the Café a large 6m high floor to ceiling glazed curtain walling was installed to let in as much natural light as possible. In doing so a giant greenhouse effect was created, leading to the requirement of installing a new air handling unit on the roof. This had to be lifted into position with an 80 tonne crane and associated duct work needed to be routed through the leisure centre.

Once all of the builders work was complete we carefully laid the new floor coverings which included Altro vinyl flooring with cove skirting and Gradus Matwell and frame, and decorations where required.
